威廉·梅克比斯·萨克雷（1811-1863），英国十九世纪杰出的批判现实主义作家，出生于印度加尔各答附近，六岁时被送回英国求学，成年后继承了父亲的遗产，但很怏挥霍殆尽，只好自谋生路，曾任杂志专栏作者，撰写了大量中短篇小说、长篇小说、散文、游记、书评、一八四八年发表成名作《名利场》，奠定在英国文坛的地位。小说描写孤女蓓基·夏泼，在英国十九世纪现实的名利场中抓住每个机会，钻进上流社会的经历。小说继承了英国文学一贳的幽默讽刺，词锋犀利，机智敏锐，解剖人生和人性精妙入徽，有力鞭挞了十九世纪充满污垢的上流社会。
