萨克雷(william makepeace thackeray 18111863),英国小说家。父亲是东印度公司的税务员兼行政官,萨克雷出生于印度的加尔各答,四岁时父亲辞世,萨克雷随之被送回英国受教育。后入剑桥大学,一面写作诗歌,同时热衷于赌博,在欧陆各国过着放浪形骸的生活。在德国游学期间结识了大作家沃尔夫冈歌德,并曾一度至巴黎攻读美术。萨克雷用其父的遗产做投资杂志及银行代理,均告失败。萨克雷自1833年起即用笔名在报刊发表文章,也出了几本书,但直至写出长篇小说名利场,才被世人公认为与同时代的狄更斯齐名的天才作家。除写作小说外,他的散文也独树一帜,巴黎小品集、爱尔兰小品集、势利眼集,亦文笔隽永,为广大读者所喜爱。
