Euripideswasaprolificwriter,theauthorofsomeeighty-eightormoreplays,ofwhichnineteenhavesurvivedunderhisname.Hewascriticizedbytheconservativesofhistimeforintroducingshabbyheroesandimmoralwomenintohisplays,apracticethattheyconsidereddegradingtothenobleformoftragedy.However,audiencestowhomhispredecessorswerecoldandremotefoundEuripidesdirectandappealing.
