Euripideswasaprolificwriter,theauthorofsomeeighty-eightormoreplays,ofwhichnineteenhavesurvivedunderhisname.Hewascriticizedbytheconservativesofhistimeforintroducingshabbyheroesandimmoralwomenintohisplays,apracticethattheyconsidereddegradingtothenobleformoftragedy.However,audiencestowhomhispredecessorswerecoldandremotefoundEuripidesdirectandappealing.

Euripidesbecameimmenselypopularafterhediedandhisinfluencealtereddramaforever.ConsideredbyGeorgeBernardShawtobethegreatestoftheGreekdramatists,Euripidesisnowregardedbymanyastheoriginatorofthedramaticsensibilitythatdevelopedintowhatwecall"modern"Europeandrama.
