Hislifewasasdarkanddramaticasthegreatnovelshewrote.HewasborninMoscowin1821,thesonofaformerarmysurgeonwhosedrunkenbrutalityledhisownserfstomurderhimbypouringvodkadownhisthroatuntilhestrangled.Ashortfirstnovel,PoorFolk(1846),broughthiminstantsuccess,buthiswritingcareerwascutshortbyhisarrestforallegedsubversionagainsttheTsarin1849.Inprisonhewasgiventhe"silenttreatment"foreightmonths,beforehewasledinfrontofafiringsquad.Dressedinadeathshroud,hefacedanopengraveandawaitedexecutionwhenanorderarrivedcommutinghissentence.HethenspentfouryearsathardlaborinaSiberianprison,wherehebegantosufferfromepilepsy,andheonlyreturnedtoSt.Petersburgafulltenyearsafterheleftinchains.Hisprisonexperiencescoupledwithhisconversiontoaconservativeandprofoundlyreligiousphilosophyformesthebasisforhisgreatnovels.ButitwashisfortuitousmarriagetoAnnaSnitkina,followingaperiodofutterdestitutionbroughtaboutbyhiscompulsivegambling,thatgaveDostoyevskytheemotionalstabilitytocompleteCrimeandPunishment,TheIdiot,ThePossessed,andTheBrothersKaramazov.Whenhediedin1881,heleftalegacyofmasterworksthatinfluencedthegreatthinkersandwritersoftheWesternworld.
