CarlGustavJungwas,togetherwithFreudandAdler,oneofthethreegreatpioneersinmodernpsychiatry.Hewasbornin1865inSwitzerland,wherehestudiedmedicineandpsychiatryandlaterbecameoneofSigmundFreud’searlysupportersandcollaborators.Eventually,serioustheoreticaldisagreements(amongthemJung’sviewofthereligiousinstinctinman)ledtoadoctrinalandpersonalbreakbetweenthetwofamedpsychiatrists.Dr.Jungwastheauthorofmanybooks,andhelivedandpracticedformanyyearsinhisnativeZurich.Hediedin1961.JosephCampbellwasinterestedinmythologysincehischildhoodinNewYork,whenhereadbooksaboutAmericanIndians,frequentlyvisitedtheAmericanMuseumofNaturalHistory,andwasfascinatedbythemuseum'scollectionoftotempoles.HeearnedhisB.A.andM.A.degreesatColumbiain1925and1927andwentontostudymedievalFrenchandSanskritattheuniversitiesofParisandMunich.AfteraperiodinCalifornia,whereheencounteredJohnSteinbeckandthebiologistEdRicketts,hetaughtattheCanterburySchool,then,in1934,joinedtheliteraturedepartmentatSarahLawrenceCollege,apostheretainedformanyyears.Duringthe1940sand'50s,hehelpedSwamiNikhilanandatotranslatetheUpanishadsandTheGospelofSriRamakrishna.ThemanybooksbyProfessorCampbellincludeTheHerowithaThousandFaces,MythstoLiveBy,TheFlightoftheWildGander,andTheMythicImage.HeeditedThePortableArabianNights,ThePortableJung,andotherworks.Hediedin1987.
