    IF it is true that the form of tombs and buriaJ objeds reflecf a society， China's imperial tombs and mausoleums can be regarded as inverse images of its ancient society. This book contains a large amount of historical material describing the development， types and dynastic variations of the country's imperial tombs and mausoleums through its history. Represeritative tombs and mausoleums are selected and chronologically arranged to present and explain in detail the construction of underground palaces and the characteristics and artistic styles of their surface structures.
    Also given special note are the tombs of Confucius （551—479B.C.） and Guan Yu（？—219）：Though not of aristocratic origin they hold specific social positions in China's history. Along with a comprehensive listing of more than four hundred imperial tombs and mausolcums， there are over one hundred rare photographs selected to reflect the ageless development and dramatic nature of China's imperial tombs and mausoleums.

【作者简介】

    Luo Zhewen was born in the town of Yibin in Sichuan in 1924. In 1940， he entered China Architecture Studies Society， at thattime China's only learned society for ancient architectural studies， where he studied ancient architecture under Liang Sicheng and Liu Dunzhen. In I948 he graduated from the China Architectural Institute with a M.A. degree. Beginning in 1950， he advanced through a number of positions in the Ministry of Culture's Bureau of Cultural Relics and the State Bureau of Cultural Relics， serving as business secretary， head of the Cultural Relics Department and director of the Cultural Relics Archives Reference Room， moving on to head the China Cultural Relics Research Institute. He currently heads the ancient architecture specialist group under the State Bureau of Cultural Relics and is also a senior engineer， vice-chairman of the China Cultural Relics Society and vice-chairman of the China Great Wall Society. He served as a member of the 6th， 7th and 8th CPPCC National Committee. 
    Luo has been long engaged in the study， protection and management of cultural relics and ancient architecture. A renowned state-class expert in cultural relics and ancient architectural studies， he has authored a number of books on the subject， including了he Great Wall of China in History and Legend， The Great Wall， A Brief History of Ancient Chinese Architecture， and China's Ancient Pagodas.
