Housed in an old building dating to 1885 that has been recently restored, the museum itself is an excellent example of preservation and restoration of the architectural heritage. It aims not only at the collection and safeguarding of valuable objects that deal with the history of Nicosia, but above all it informs the citizens and the visitors, of the courageous and stormy past of the capital of the island.
The museum is a living cultural nucleus, as it pre - serves and promotes, through its various organized activities, the history and the traditions of the island.
This museum is the result of a dream by the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Lellos Demetriades, that became a reality thanks to the generous donnation of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation which covered all the expenditure for its purchase, its restoration and its contents.
Today, Nicosia is proud of its historical museum.
Its value and presence to the city of Nicosia was recognized not only by its citizens, but also by Europe, who awarded in 1991 to the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, the European Museum of the Year Award.
