This volume of the series on Recent Advances in Myocardiology represents a part of the proceedings of the ninth International Congress of the International Society for Heart Research held in New Delhi from September 28-October 2 ,1978. This mono - graph contains selected papers that have been arranged in two sections, namely, heart physiology and pathophysiology, and myocardial hypoxia, ischemia, and infarction. These articles represent a comprehensive presentation of latest developments in several areas of heart function derangements and attempt to explore the possible mechanisms leading to cell damage. In addition to describing the control of myocardial metabolism in health and disease, these papers implicate the role of calcium, oxygen - lack, substrate-lack, and catecholamines in the genesis of cardiac pathophysiology. A special message contained in this book concerns the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease and some possible approaches for its prevention. It is hoped that both the concepts and contents contained in this volume will stimulate further research in heart diseases for the benefit of mankind.
