A corpse is found on the lookout near Mulholland Drive. The victim, identified as Dr. Stanley Kent, was shot dead with two pistol shots to the neck: at first sight, a typical execution. The investigation is entrusted to Detective Harry Bosch. This is the case he was waiting for, the first since he left the Unresolved Cases Unit for the Special Homicide Team. But as Bosch begins to shed light on Kent's life the first contradictions emerge. It does not appear, in fact, that man had contacts with organized crime; certainly we know that he could freely access dangerous radioactive substances in almost all the hospitals in the county. The initial picture, that of a trivial murder for a settlement of accounts, soon takes on disturbing contours, which make the investigation much more complex and urgent. Bosch must fight against the clock not only to nail the culprits, but also to beat the FBI and the National Security Department, convinced that the matter is too delicate for the Los Angeles police. Not only that: his former lover Rachel Walling is part of the federal team that tries to blow his case, making his job even more difficult. Following his track relentlessly, Bosch once again relies on instinct, with the knowledge that, in addition to a murder to be filed, this time there is a threat at stake all over Los Angeles.
