RaymondThorntonChandler(1888-1959)wasthemasterpractitionerofAmericanhard-boiledcrimefiction.AlthoughhewasborninChicago,ChandlerspentmostofhisboyhoodandyouthinEnglandwhereheattendedDulwichCollegeandlaterworkedasafreelancejournalistforTheWestminsterGazetteandTheSpectator.DuringWorldWarI,ChandlerservedinFrancewiththeFirstDivisionoftheCanadianExpeditionaryForce,transferringlatertotheRoyalFlyingCorps(R.A.F.).In1919hereturnedtotheUnitedStates,settlinginCalifornia,whereheeventuallybecamedirectorofanumberofindependentoilcompanies.TheDepressionputanendtohiscareer,andin1933,attheageofforty-five,heturnedtowritingfiction,publishinghisfirststoriesinBlackMask.Chandler’sdetectivestoriesoftenstarredthebrashbuthonorablePhilipMarlowe(introducedin1939inhisfirstnovel,TheBigSleep)andwerenotedfortheirliteratepresentationanddead-oncriticaleye.Neveraprolificwriter,Chandlerpublishedonlyonecollectionofstoriesandsevennovelsinhislifetime.SomeofChandler’snovels,likeTheBigSleep,weremadeintoclassicmovieswhichhelpeddefinethefilmnoirstyle.InthelastyearofhislifehewaselectedpresidentoftheMysteryWritersofAmerica.HediedinLaJolla,CaliforniaonMarch26,1959.
