恩斯特·雷贝尔于1976年毕业于慕尼黑美术学院，主修绘画、平面设计和艺术教育。随后，他在慕尼黑大学学习艺术史、哲学和古典考古学。1979年获得艺术史博士学位，1988年撰写教授论文，1992年起担任慕尼黑大学艺术史和艺术教育教授。他出版了许多关于版画史、阿尔布雷希特·杜勒的艺术和生活以及艺术理论和教学主题的出版物。
