- A phrenologist and spiritualist, Fowler produced the most popular building "invention" of the inge- nious nineteenth century. The octagon, Fowler claimed, was 2o percent more efficient than conventional buildings in its use of a given square-foot area; he also intimated that the shape possessed cer- tain mystical powers. For a decade, as a result, octagonal dwellings, schoolhouses, and other struc- tures were erected from Natchez, Mississippi, to San Francisco.
