This wonderfully English novel of life among the British upper middle class is the fiction debut of poet Sheepshanks (e.g., Thinning Grapes, 1992). Sheepshanks writes about what she knows: an estate in Yorkshire. Mother of four, sometime artist, and wife of apparently solid Archie, Sonia is determined to save the family home, which is quite literally falling down around them (chunks of it drop with great regularity and hilarity at inopportune moments), and plan for her first exhibition in years when she meets and falls in love with Simon. Ultimately, he proves her saviour, helping her to regain her art and her house, though she finally must renounce him to do so. All the expected English characters are here, some painted rather broadly, but this is an appealing story for British fiction fans.
