本教材定位为农林类学科通用学术英语。选材兼顾学术和趣味，每个单元包括与农林学科相关的三篇阅读文章，内容和话题具有较高的相关。篇为概述、背景介绍类文章；第二篇为本单元话题涉及的相关问题、热点话题类文章；第三篇为与新技术或未来展望相关的文章。三篇文章之后为词汇、学术阅读、学术写作以及听力练。本教材既适用于农林类高等院校老师课堂和课下学，也适用于从事农林相关行业工作的科技人员进行自学。

2018年、农业农村部、林业和草原局发布了关于加强农科教结合实施农林人才教育培养计划 2.0的意见，其中提出要紧紧围绕乡村振兴战略和生态文明建设，坚持产学研协作，建设中国特、世界水的农林专业；要创新农林人才培养模式，推进方法改革，实施探究式、讨论式等多种方法，促进的批判思维和创新意识的培养；开展以能力为导向的多元评价，突i出对学能力、实践能力和创新能力的核，建立多样化的学业指导和核评价体系。中国高等教育已经从规模扩张转到内涵发展的轨道之上，面对新科技和产业的时代浪潮，我们应该超前识变、积极应变、主动求变。
农林人才的培养离不开农林学科领域专业国际化知识，必须具备的关键素质应该包括：宽广的国际化视野、扎实的本专业国际化知识、熟悉和掌握国际惯例、较强的跨沟通能力和独立的国际活动能力。因此，帮助提高专业领域内的英语交流能力，即学术英语能力，是新时代高校公共外语的一项不可推卸的重要责任，而这种能力必须经过系统的学和训练才能提高。本教材可以帮助提高在学科领域进行国际交流的外语能力，切实提高本科生使用英语从事学术活动的能力，为培养未来农林人才奠定学科英语基础。
本教材共有 8个单元，涉及林业、城市农业、生物多样、生态系统和园林规划等方面。每个单元包括三篇阅读文章，内容和话题具有较高的相关，选材兼顾专业和趣味，避太过专业化和艰涩的文章。篇为概述、背景介绍类文章；第二篇为本单元话题涉及的相关问题、热点话题类文章；第三篇为与新技术、未来展望相关的文章。另外包括 2–3篇听力，围绕各单元主题，锻炼学术听力和演讲技能。通过本教材的学，可以掌握以下 3种技能：
（1）学术阅读技能：能够读懂英语阅读专业文献；
（2）学术写作技能：掌握国际通用学术规范，能够使用英语撰写符合规范的摘要和结，转述他人观点，甚至撰写英文学术；
（3）学术听说技能：能够听懂英文授课、讲座并记，能够使
ii用英语宣读，陈述演示研究成果，参加学术讨论。通用学术英语是大学英语的重要组成部分。本教材结合农林类专业方面的科普知识和通用学术英语技能，为过渡到学专门用途学术英语做好语言和专业知识储备。本教材的重点在于培养汲取信息、处理信息和表达信息的能力。在注重语言技能培养的同时，注重把学术英语素养（如文献搜索、查找资料、引用规范、转述、撰写摘要等）和语言交际能力的培养结合起来。本教材既适用于农林类高等院校老师课堂和课下学，也适用于从事农林相关工作的科技人员进行自学。需要注意的是，书中每个单元 part e听力部分的音可以通过手机扫描对应二维码进行在线收听、收看或下载。其中 ted演讲相关，在相应位置附有相关演讲者姓名及演讲题目。读者可上网访问 ted官网.ted.，在站内搜索对应进行在线收看。
