Harry Sinclair Lewis's first successful novel was Main Street (1920), but his reputation was secured by the publication of Babbitt (1922). He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Arrowsmith (1925) but refused to accept the honor. He did accept, however, when he became the first American writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1930. During the last part of his life he spent a great deal of time in Europe and died there in 1951.
