ChristopherMarlowe(1564-1593)wasborninCanterburytheyearofShakespeare’sbirth.LikeShakespeare,hewasofaprosperousmiddle-classfamily,butunlikeShakespearehewenttoauniversity,CorpusChristiCollege,Cambridge,wherehereceivedthebachelor’sdegreein1584andthemaster’sdegreein1587.Thetermsofhisscholarshipimpliedthathewaspreparingfortheclergybuthedidnotbecomeaclergyman.ShortlybeforehereceivedhisM.A.theUniversityseemstohavewishedtowithholdit,apparentlysuspectinghimofconversiontoRomanCatholicism,buttheQueen’sPrivyCouncilintervenedonhisbehalf,statingthathe“haddonehermajestygoodservice”andhadbeenemployed“inmatterstouchingthebenefitofthecountry.”Hispreciseserviceisunknown.AfterCambridge,MarlowewenttoLondon,whereheapparentlylivedaturbulentlife(hehadtwobrusheswiththelawandwassaidtobedisreputable)whilepursuingacareerasadramatist.Hewrotesevenplays--thedatesofwhichareuncertain--beforehewasyetagaininlegaldifficulties:hewasarrestedin1593,accusedofatheism.Hewasnotimprisoned,andbeforehiscasecouldbedecidedhewasdead,havingbeenstabbedinatavernwhilequarrelingoverthebill.FrankRomanyteachesEnglishatSt.John’sCollege,Oxford.
