ThishistoryiswrittenprimarilyforChinesereaders,inparticularforChinesecollegestudentsmajoringinEnglishlanguageandliterature,withtheaimtogivethemahistoricalsurveyofEnglishliteraturefromitsearliestbeginningsdowntothe20thcentury.AsmanycollegestudentsinChinatodayarebeingintroducedforthefirsttimetoEnglishliteratureinanysystematicway,biographicalsketchesofthemajorwritersandratherdetailedresumesoftheirmajorworksaregenerallyprovidedinthishistory,beforeIenterintoanyseriousdiscussionsontheauthorsandtheirwritings.
Acompanion-bookprovidingstudentswithselectionsfromrepresentativeworksofrepresentativeEnglishauthors,arrangedchronologicallyandaccompaniedwithintroductoryremarksandnotes,isexpectedtoappearatthesametimeasthishistory.Itishopedthatthetwobookstogether,thishistoryand“SelectedReadingsinEnglishLiterature”,willgivethestudentsarudimentaryknowledgeofEnglishliteratureinitshistoricaldevelopment.
