Victor-MarieHugowasbornin1802atBesanon,wherehisfather,anofficerunderNapoleon,wasstationed.Inhisfirstdecadethefamilymovedfromposttopost:Corsica,Naples,Madrid.Afterhisparentsseparatedin1812,HugolivedinPariswithhismotherandbrothers.AttwentyhemarriedAdeleFoucherandpublishedhisfirstpoetrycollection.HugowaselectedtotheAcademieFrancaisein1841.Theaccidentaldeathtwoyearslaterofhiseldestdaughterandherhusbanddevastatedhimandmarkedtheendofhisfirstliteraryperiod.Bythenpoliticshadbecomecentraltohislife.ThoughhewasaRoyalistinhisyouth,hisviewsbecameincreasinglyliberalaftertheJulyrevolutionof1830:Freedominart,freedominsociety,thereisthedoublegoal.HeinitiallysupportedthepoliticalascentofLouisNapoleon,butturnedsavagelyagainsthimafterbeingdeniedaroleingovernmentfollowingthecoupde'tatof1851.HugowentintoexileinBrusselsandJersey,launchingfierceliteraryattacksontheSecondEmpire.AfterthefalloftheSecondEmpirein1870,HugoreturnedtoFranceandwasreelectedtotheNationalAssembly,andthentotheSenate.Hehadbecomealegendaryfigureandnationalicon.
