PeggyParishknewwhatchildrenliketoread.AftergraduatingfromtheUniversityofSouthCarolinawithadegreeinEnglish,shetaughtschoolinOklahoma,Kentucky,and,forover15years,atthewell-known,progressiveDaltonSchoolinNewYorkCity.ItwasatDaltonthatshebegantofindwaystoreleasehercreativeideasandenergy,Thoughshenevertookawritingcourse,"writingstoriesforchildrencamenaturally."Herfirstbook,publishedin1961,wasfollowedwithLet'sBeIndiansandin1963withherunforgettableAmeliaBedelia.

Alwaysinvolvedwitheducationinsomeway,PeggyParishdidtelevisionpiecesonpreschooleducationandchildren'sbooks,wrotechildren's-bookreviewcolumns,andlednumerousin-servicetrainingworkshopsforteachers.Indiscussingherideasabouteducation,shesaid,"Children'srightsaretakenawayfromthemwhentheyenterschool.WhatItrytoshowteachersisthatalltheskillsneededtoreadcanbetaughtoutsideoftextbooks.Today'schildrenarenotgoingtoreadwhattheyarenotinterestedin.Andifapositiveattitudetowardreadingisnotdevelopedduringthefirstthreeyearsofschool,itisvirtuallyimpossibletodevelopitlater."
