- Gary Provost, youngest of nine children, was born in Boston on November 14, 1944. Remarkably, he was the seventh son of a seventh son. Gary's childhood was spent in poverty, yet he maintained a unique perspective on life. (Both are reflected in his first YA novel--The Pork Chop War published by Bradbury Press.) After graduating from high school in 1962, Gary hitch-hiked around the country and began a succession of thirty-five jobs which he later said “didn’t pay much, but gave me a lot to write about, and also would some day be glamorous on the back of a dust jacket.” Finally, after ten years of writing, just as he was “plodding toward that critical thirtieth birthday without a credit" to his credit, he set off on a self-publishing venture with a book of offbeat humor. The Dorchester Gas Tank proved to be “not an end, but a beginning." Tank soon captured the attention of readers who formed fan clubs, and Writer’s Digest magazine, for which Gary later contributed countless instructional articles that won the hearts of WD readers, worldwide. During the 80s and early 90s, he served as contributing editor, correspondent, and regular columnist for WD. Because of his extraordinary versatility and renowned instruction, Gary Provost was eventually dubbed “The Dustin Hoffman of the Typewriter,” and “The Writer’s Writer.” During his career, he’d written in genres ranging from four award-winning novels for children (including Good If It Goes, which won a national award and was co-authored by his wife Gail, as were Popcorn, and David & Max) to six best-selling true crime books (including Fatal Dosage, which led to the CBS TV film, Fatal Judgment).He’d published romance, humor, mystery, celebrity biography, business non-fiction, even sports how-to. Throughout his career as columnist, humorist, biographer, editor, book doctor, ghostwriter, lecturer, writing coach, consultant to corporations, collaborator, and in-demand speaker at writing conferences nationwide, Gary was always known for his warmth, wit, and wisdom.After publishing thousands of articles and dozens of books, his final work of nonfiction--Bogart: In Search of My Father (Stephen Bogart’s autobiography about actor Humphrey Bogart)--was published shortly after his unexpected death May 10, 1995. Also published shortly after he succumbed to a heart attack, was his final work of fiction, the first of a new mystery series for Berkley Prime Crime, Baffled In Boston. Underway were several other projects, including another book for writers, and the Kelsey Grammer celebrity biography, So Far.During his writing career, Gary Provost authored seven critically acclaimed books for writers, including NAL’s The Freelance Writer’s Handbook, and 100 Ways To Improve Your Writing, and several WD top-sellers, such as How To Write and Sell True Crime, and Make Your Words Work (which the publishers call a “crystallization” of Gary’s wisdom... philosophy made practical”).After his death, How To Tell A Story: The Secrets Of Writing Captivating Tales (completed by agent/author Peter Rubie), was published in 1998. “Until his untimely death at the age of fifty--Gary Provost was one of the most beloved writing instructors... and arguably the leading teacher of writing in the United States.”
