ItookmypreliminaryexaminationsforRadcliffefromthe29thofJunetothe3rdofJulyin1897.ThesubjectsIofferedwereElementaryandAdvancedGerman,French,Latin,English,andGreekandRomanhis-tory,makingninehoursinall.Ipassedineverything,andreceived"honours"inGermanandEnglish.PerhapsanexplanationofthemethodthatwasinusewhenItookmyexaminationswillnotbeamisshere.Thestudentwasrequiredtopassinsixteenhours--twelvehoursbeingcalledelementaryandfouradvanced.Hehadtopassfivehoursatatimetohavethemcounted.Theexamina-tionpapersweregivenoutatnineo'clockatHarvardandbroughttoRadcliffebyaspecialmessenger.Eachcandidatewasknown,notbyhisname,butbyanumber.IwasNo.233,but,asIhadtouseatype-writer,myidentitycouldnotbeconcealed.Itwasthoughtadvisableformetohavemyexaminationsinaroombymyself,becausethenoiseofthetypewritermightdisturbtheothergirls.Mr.Gilmanreadallthepaperstomebymeansofthemanualalphabet.Amanwasplacedonguardatthedoortopreventinterruption.ThefirstdayIhadGerman.Mr.Gilmansatbesidemeandreadthepaperthroughfirst,thensentencebysentence,whileIrepeatedthewordsaloud,tomakesurethatIunderstoodhimperfectly.Thepapersweredifficult,andIfeltveryanxiousasIwroteoutmyanswersonthetypewriter.Mr.GilmanspelledtomewhatIhadwritten,andImadesuchchangesasIthoughtnecessary,andheinsertedthem.Iwishtosayhere,thatIhavenothadthisadvantagesinceinanyofmyexamina-tions.AtRadcliffenoonereadsthepaperstomeaftertheyarewritten,andIhavenoopportunitytocorrecterrorsunlessIfinishbeforethetimeisup.Inthat,caseIcorrectonlysuchmistakesasIcanrecallinthefewminutesallowed,andmakenotesofthesecorrectionsattheendofmypaper.IfIpassedwithhighercreditinthepreliminariesthaninthefinals,therearetworeasons.Inthefinals,noonereadmyworkovertome,andinthepreliminariesIofferedsubjectswithsomeofwhichIwasinameasurefamiliarbeforemyworkintheCambridgeschool;foratthebeginningoftheyearIhadpassedexaminationsinEnglish,History,FrenchandGerman,whichMr.GilmangavemefrompreviousHarvardpapers.Mr.GilmansentmywrittenworktotheexaminerswithacertificatethatI,candidateNo.233,hadwrittenthepapers.Alltheotherpreliminaryexaminationswereconductedinthesamemanner.Noneofthemwassodifficultasthefirst.IrememberthatthedaytheLatinpaperwasbroughttous,ProfessorSchillingcameinandinformedmeIhadpassedsatisfactorilyinGerman.Thisencouragedmegreatly,andIspedontotheendoftheordealwithalightheartandasteadyhand.P72-73
