GeorgeEliot(MaryAnnEvansCross)wasbornonNovember22,1819atArburyFarm,Warwickshire,England.Shereceivedanordinaryeducationand,uponleavingschoolattheageofsixteen,embarkedonaprogramofindependentstudytofurtherherintellectualgrowth.In1841shemovedwithherfathertoCoventry,wheretheinfluencesof“skepticsandrationalists”swayedherfromanintensereligiousdevoutnesstoaneventualbreakwiththechurch.Thedeathofherfatherin1849leftherwithasmalllegacyandthefreedomtopursueherliteraryinclinations.In1851shebecametheassistanteditoroftheWestminsterReview,apositionsheheldforthreeyears.In1854camethefatedmeetingwithGeorgeHenryLewes,thegiftededitorofTheLeader,whowastobecomeheradviserandcompanionforthenexttwenty-fouryears.Herfirstbook,ScenesofaClericalLife(1858),wasfollowedbyAdamBede(1859),TheMillontheFloss(1860),SilasMarner(1861),andMiddlemarch(1872).ThedeathofLewes,in1878,leftherstrickenandlonely.OnMay6,1880,shemarriedJohnCross,afriendoflongstanding,andafterabriefillnessshediedonDecember22ofthatyear,inLondon.
