Foreword Cheng Shifa (1921-2007), originally named Cheng Tong, was born in Songjiang District of Shanghai. In 1938, he entered the Chinese painting department of Shanghai Art School and learned from Wang Geyi, Wang Shengyuan and others. In 1949, he entered East China People's Fine Arts Publishing House and undertook comic strip, New Year Painting, illustration and traditional Chinese painting creation. In 1983, he served as the vice-president of Xiling Seal Engraver and in 1984 he became the Director of Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. In 2007 he died of illness. Various catalogues of him including Cheng Shifa's Art, Chinese Modern Masters-Cheng Shifa and others were published. Cheng Shifa dabbled in art widely; he learned traditional painting in early years and later engaged himself in creation of comic strips and illustrations, then he picked up the traditional Chinese figure painting. He was good at comprehensive mastery of all his fields and established a profound and rich personal artistic world. In his world, there are ink color comic strips, illustrations which combined the form and ink wash with modern shaping, as well as innovative traditional Chinese figure painting which absorbed from both folk art and western classical art elements; he also created flower and bird paintings, landscape paintings developing the lyric freehand tradition of literati painting, and animations full of the interest of ink and water. Especially in the field of traditional Chinese figure painting, Cheng Shifa formed a unique style both antique and modern from the subject of minority nationalities, which is combined with the sense of modern life, interest of folk art as well as the ink and brush form from tradition. Cheng Shifa's artistic style with distinct personality was called "Cheng Style" in art circles; with free and elegant ink and wash, bright and unrestrained color, Cheng Style featured both refined and popular tastes as well as moderate and meaningful tone. It was one of the classics in Chinese traditional painting of the 20th century which connected the ancient and today.
