It is the first time the main social housing and urbanism projects developed by the architect and urbanist Héctor Vigliecca and team are gathered and unravelled in a a single book. "The Third Territory - Collective Housing and City (Vigliecca & Associados)" discloses the thought process behind the projects that praise Héctor Vigliecca as he confronts critical areas such as urban water edges, squats or Brazilian favelas.
The projects in this book are presented according to their site conditions making it possible to understand how the architect creates city-like conditions - and as a result, citizenship - in places void of such. Instead of isolated and formatted housing clusters, his projects stand out for the relation they maintain with the city and the originality of his solutions without sacrificing architectural quality.
More than just a book filled with beautiful projects, "The Third Territory - Collective Housing and City" offers a new perspective to the debate on housing as a social policy. What defines establishing livability in precarious cities?
Offered in a bilingual edition (Portuguese/English), the presented projects were organized and analyzed by Lizete Maria Rubano and introduced by Luiz Recamán. Lizete is a researcher and professor at the Architecture and Urbanism School at Mackenzie University and FAAP having also organized the book Hipóteses do Real (2013), first book published by Vigliecca & Associados. Recamán, Ph.D. is an Architectural History and Project Design professor at the Architecture and Urbanism School at São Paulo University and a researcher at the
Contemporary Spatial Studies Center (NEC USP).
Illustrated with models, sketches, floor plans, section cuts and perspective drawings, in addition to Leonardo Finotti´s photos, the book still contextualizes and discusses the work of Héctor Vigliecca within the history of Brazilian architecture, analyzing the meaning of his work and explaining why he constantly establishes new parameters.
In his introductory text, Héctor Vigliecca invites the reader to his universe of reflections not with answers, but with further questions, reaffirming the principles that make him stand out as an architect: Social housing is not a construction nor a quantity problem, but a question of how we build the city since we understand the urban realm as the main factor that determines the quality of living. Housing must always be connected to the city´s structure making them legible and inseparable - be it urban or suburban.
Born in 1940 in Montevideo, Uruguay, Héctor Vigliecca graduated in Architecture from the Universidad de la República UDELAR (1968) in Montevideo and obtained a Master s Degree in Urban Planning from the Universitá degli Studi di Roma (1970). He moved to Brazil in 1975 where he has worked with Joaquim Guedes for the National Consortium of Contractor Engineers (CNEC) and has maintained the office Padovano & Vigliecca for seven years. In 1996, he established Vigliecca & Associados in partnership with Luciene Quel, which today has offices in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He also taught in Brazilian and Uruguayan universities.
Vigliecca presents a broad range of projects which include social housing, sports arenas, buildings in the cultural, educational and institutional fields as well as urban interventions. He is known for his innovative way of thinking about social housing in Brazil and has developed projects that are now important references.
Vigliecca stands out in national and international competitions in his 40 years of career, from the 90 competitions he participated, 47 have yield him prizes. Amongst them, the Honorable Mention for the Grand Egyptian Museum (2003). He has received awards such as the Best of 2012 in the Urbanity category, from APCA (Association of Art Critics from São Paulo); Highlight Award in two São Paulo Architecture Biennales (1993 and 2003); and The Best of Architecture (2008), from the Abril Group, in the categories Urban Interventions and Dwelling Projects. He was also nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award for Latin American Architecture (1998).
Lizete Rubano
Graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from Mackenzie University School of Architecture and Urban Design (1981), Master s Degree and Ph.D in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of São Paulo School of Architecture and Urban Design-FAUUSP (1992/2001). She is a professor at Mackenzie University School of Architecture and Urban Design. Her main research deals with Public Housing and City through the perspective of Contemporary Conditions. She is the organizer of the book Hypotheses on Reality (Vigliecca & Associados, 2013) and the organizer and author of the analysis of projects from the book The Third Territory Collective Housing and City (Vigliecca & Associados, 2015). The analysis are result of a research developed by a group of teachers and students from Graduate and Postgraduate Programs from Mackenzie University School of Architecture and Urban Design.
Luiz Recamán
Graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of Sao Paulo School of Architecture and Urban Design - FAUUSP (1983), graduated in Social Science from the University of São Paulo School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences - FFLCH (1987), Master s Degree in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences - FFLCH (1995) and a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences - FFLCH (2002). He is a professor, Ph.D in Graduate and Postgraduate Programs at the University of São Paulo School of Architecture and Urban Design -FAUUSP. His main research deals with the Aesthetics of Architecture, Architectural Critique, Brazilian Modern Architecture and the relationship between Social Housing and Urban Development. He is the co-author of Brazil's Modern Architecture (Phaidon, 2004) and Vilanova Artigas: Habitação e cidade na modernização Brasileira (Unicamp, 2013). He is the author of the introductory text of the book The Third Territory Collective Housing and City (Vigliecca & Associados, 2015).
