After studying at the University of Paris and then at Waseda University in Tokyo, he obtained a doctorate in Japanese studies at Columbia University in New York. He now teaches Japanese literature and history at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his work on classical Japanese literature has been published in several languages. DONALD KEENE, the well-known scholar in Japanese studies, is currently Professor of Japanese at Columbia University.
