本书内容涵盖面较广，时间跨度从美国殖民地时期到后现代主义时期，首次在国内同类书籍中全面展示美国文学的全貌，其中包括美洲土著印第安文学和当代各族裔文学，体现美国文学鲜明的杂糅性。全书共分五章，包括30位经典作家。每章由六大部分构成：文学史阶段概要、作家简介、选文评论、选文、思考题、选文概要。诗歌和短篇小说尽可能保留完整的原文。长篇小说一般选取完整一章，戏剧一般选取完整一幕，但对过长的篇幅做一定删节，删节处用省略号表示。评论文一般只节选与选文相关的段落，删节处用省略号表示，参考文献中提供查看原评论文的相关信息。附录是拓展阅读部分，主要介绍了5位仍活跃在当代文坛的后现代主义作家，他们的作品原文没有收录在本书中，通过本部分介绍，读者可以挑选自己喜欢的相关作品原著购买、阅读、收藏。
作者简介卢敏，女，汉族。上海师范外国语学院教授，文学博士，英语专业负责人。主要从事英语文学、文学理论与批评、翻译教学与研究。
