《林间老童》共计收录15个故事，部分篇目曾在报刊杂志等出版物上刊登，其余作品则为首次出版的新作。该书的同名短篇小说《林间老童》已于去年在美国《纽约客》杂志发表，故事围绕上了年纪的两个姐妹在湖边小屋的生活经历展开。
