RobertB.Parkerbeganasastudentofhard-boiledcrimewriterssuchasDashiellHammettandRaymondChandler,butwhenhebecameacrimewriterhimself,hewasoneoftherarecontemporaryauthorstobeconsideredonparwithhispredecessors.TheSpenserseries,featuringaBoston-basedex-boxerandex-cop,isoneofthegenre'smostrespectedandpopularfixtures.Notedfortheirsharpdialogueandfinecharacterdevelopment,theSpenserbookscarryonatraditionwhileupdatingit,particularlyingivingitsherotwostrongalteregosinHawk,ablackfriendandright-handman;andSusanSilverman,Spenser'spsychologistloveinterest.Parker'sinclusionofotherracesandsexualpersuasions(severalofhisnovelsfeaturegaycharacters,asensibilitystrengthenedinParkerthroughhissons,bothofwhomaregay)giveamoremodernfeeltothecasescomingintoSpenser'soffice.TheSpenserseries,whichbeganwith1973'sTheGodwulfManuscript,hasanelementoftoughnessthatsuitsitsBostonmilieu;butitdelvesjustasoftenintothecomplexrelationshipbetweenSilvermanandSpenser,andtheinterplaybetweentheP.I.andHawk.
