从18世纪开始，西方人就在十分认真地观察中国。他们画了大量的图像、拍摄了大量的照片，并将其带回了西方，让西方人看见中国是什么样子。戛尔尼使团随团画家亚历山大，在从澳门到北京的往返旅行中，创作了大量反映当时中国风土人情的画作，随后在欧洲引起轰动。这是西方画家**次如此详尽地观察和描绘中国，也是将中国描绘得如此充满神奇浪漫色彩和异国情调的*后一个时期。书稿收集了亚历山大仅有两本著作《中国的服装》《中国人的服饰和习俗图鉴》及一些罕见单张版画。两本著作合并出版，这在国内外均为首次。
作者简介：
威廉·亚历山大(William Alexander,1767—1816):生于英国 肯特郡,1784 年进入皇家美术学院绘画专业学习。1792 年作为 制图员、马戛尔尼使团随团画家托马斯·希基的助手访问了中国, 创作了大量的速写和水彩画。1794 年回到伦敦后,亚历山大过 了一段写生、以画会友的生活。1802 年,成为英国画家军事学 院的教师,1808 年任大英博物馆古文物部的助理馆员,直至去世。 著有《中国的服装》(1805 年)、《中国人的服饰和习俗图鉴》 (1815 年)。
赵省伟，厦门大学历史系毕业,目前专注于中国历史影像的收 藏和出版,藏有大量关于中国主题的法国、德国报纸和书籍, 著有《遗失在西方的中国史:法国彩色画报记录的中国 1850— 1937》《西洋镜:海外史料看甲午》等书。
邱丽媛，北京大学中文系毕业,现任教于北京华文学院,研究 方向为中外文化交流传播,译有《西洋镜:1907,北京—巴黎 汽车拉力赛》等书。
