MarcoPolowasbornin1254,thesonofaVenetianMerchant,andmadehisfirstvisittoChinawithhisfatherandunclein1271.Theyspentthenext20yearsintheserviceoftheKubilaiKhan,travellingthroughouttheMongolianempire.TheyreturnedhometoVenicein1292andtowardstheendofthecentury,MarcoPolowastakenprisonerinGenoaduringtheCivilWar.ItwasprobablywhileinprisonthathemetRustichelloofPisa,aromancewriter,withwhomhewroteTheTravels.Hediedin1324,leavingthepossessionshehadamassedonhistravelstobedividedbyhisthreedaughters.
