ThedaughterofMaryWollestonecraft,theardentfeministandauthorofAVindicationontheRightofWomen,andWilliamGoodwin,theRadical-anarchistphilosopherandauthorofLivesoftheNecromancers,MaryGoodwinwasbornintoafreethinking,revolutionaryhouseholdinLondononAugust30,1797.Educatedmainlybyherintellectualsurroundings,shehadlittleformalschoolingandatsixteenelopedwiththeyoungpoetPercyByssheShelly;theyeventuallymarriedin1816.

MaryShelly'slifehadmanytragicelements.HermotherdiedgivingbirthtoMary;herhalf-sistercommittedsuicide;HarrietShelly–Percy'swifedr5ownedheselfandherunbornchildafterheranoffwithMary'WilliamGoodwindisownedMaryandShellyaftertheelopement,but–heavilyindebt–recantedandcametothemformoney;Mary'sfirstchilddiedsoonafteritsbirth;andin1822PercyShellydrownedintheGulfofLaSpezia–whenMarywasnotquitetwenty-five.

MaryShellyrecalledthatherhusbandwas"foreverinciting"herto"obtainliteraryreputation."Butshedidnotbegintowriteseriouslyuntilthesummerof1816,whensheandShellyweinSwitzerland,neighbortoLordByron.Onenightfollowingacontesttocomposeghoststories,Maryconceivedhermasterpeicve.Frankenstein.AfterShelly'sdeathshecontinuedtowriteValperga(1823),TheLastMan(1826),Ladore(1835),andFaulkner(1837),inadditiontoeditinghehusband'sworks.In1838shebegantoworkonhisbiography,butowingtopoorhealthshecompletedonlyafragment.

AlthoughshereceivedmarriageproposalsfromTrelawney,JohnHowardPayne,andperhapsWashingtonIrving,MaryShellyneverremarried."IwanttobeMaryShellyonmytombstone,"sheisreportedtohavesaid.ShediedonFebruary1,1851,survivedbyheson,PercyFlorence.
