Each month there's another holiday or special event that teachers and librarians choose to explore with their children. This handbook contains materials, insights and suggestions for teaching children about holidays celebrated throughout the world.
From School Library Journal: Access options abound in this hefty, comprehensive guide. Librarians can look up celebrations by month, season, country, or culture. They can explore familiar holidays such as Thanksgiving or learn about such lesser-known festivities as Itse Selu (the Cherokee Green Corn Festival). Both secular and religious celebrations are covered. The first section provides bibliographic information and suggested grade levels for titles on specific days. Sections that follow offer longer, more detailed explanations of the meaning and significance of a holiday and a helpful description of the content of each recommended book or media choice. "Explorations," or activities for sharing specific titles with students, are included; unfortunately, they are not particularly inspired. The few photographs and diagrams scattered throughout appear almost to be afterthoughts, as they do not particularly illuminate or add new information to the text. The four indexes (author, illustrator, title, and subject) are especially helpful. What the book lacks in style and imagination, it more than makes up for in information. From Booklist: Selecting books that represent favorite authors who will appeal to children, the authors have designed a work that will be useful to elementary librarians and teachers looking for culturally sensitive resources and activities to teach K-8 students about more than 80 holidays. Based upon their experience as librarians, they have provided many access points to the information. Part 1 has numerous charts of celebrations by month and by culture and even a quick list of several books for each holiday. Part 2 is the heart of this work. It is arranged by season and then by month. Each chapter begins with a short introductory section and then lists a specific holiday (secular and religious), provides full bibliographic citation and annotations to several books about the holiday, and makes several practical suggestions for extension activities. This will be a welcome addition to most elementary-school libraries. RBB
