Grade 6-9-A well-written chronicle of the lives of six men who personified the characteristics of a virtuous warrior. In addition to outlining the long and difficult path to knighthood, the author provides historical background on the code and conduct of chivalry. Separate chapters cover William Marshal, Richard the Lionheart, Saladin, Don Pero Ni-o, Bertrand du Guesclin, and Sir John de Hawkwood. Black-and-white reproductions of woodcuts, drawings, and paintings, while not particularly exciting, clearly convey the time period the book represents (roughly 1067-1250). Libraries looking for general browsing material with more visuals should consider Christopher Gravett's The Medieval Knight (Peter Bedrick, 2001).
