Afterwords (The stories; Freeman and the critics; Notes to the Afterwords) Selected Bibliography ------------ Stories depict the lives of women in late nineteenth-century New England, as sisters, friends, wives and individuals. Mary Ella Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930) was a New England writer. I became hooked on her stories when I went back to school many years ago. It is difficult to find a book of just her works, but thankfully, Norton sees fit to publish this selection with just Freeman's 18 short stories from her two early collections which have been considered the best of her numerous works. This book's last masterpiece, "The Revolt of Mother," highlights one of Freeman's most hilarious short stories about a woman who is promised a larger home, only to become dismayed as her husband first builds his ultimtate barn. This selection is a great way to become familiar with one of America's historical, overlooked woman authors.
