The construction of a cave dwelling is a big event not only for the owner, but also for the entire community. In a village, the building of a new dwelling is participated by almost everybody. Skilled workers such as masons and carpenters are normally hired from outside the village. The villagers, adults and kids, men and women, all pitch in, making contribution to the entire construction process. First, it takes a large crew to clear the ground for both the courtyard and the base of the dwelling. This process may take weeks. Anyone in the village who is available will join the large crew on this job. Since there are so many mouths to feed, women will get together to cook for the crew. Little kids will be dispatched to carry food to the worksite, where workmen will eat both lunch and dinner on site. Able-bodied men will carry large stones to make the arch. The stones are so heavy that it takes at least two or even four strong men to carry it to the top of the arch. Other men will mix the mud or whatever is needed. Imagine the work scene where one hears the sounds of mason’s chisels and carpenter’s saw, mingled with kids’ laugher and screaming as well as the rhythmic deep tones of men who carry the heavy stones to build the arch. Of course, there are folksongs, songs to lift up the spirit of the workmen. One particular folksong called “Dragon Mouth Closure” describes the final touch of the arch building, signifying the completion of the major structure of the cave dwelling. Dragon Mouth Closure Smoke is whirling up to the sky, God sends his degree to our site. Today is the lucky day for construction, Master Lu Ban is here at our invitation. When the last stone fills in the Dragon’s mouth, Good fortune will never leave our house. The closure will make the family prosperous, Its owner will ascend to the higher social status. Family fortune will accumulate year in and year out, Bringing tons of grain and numerous sheep and cow. …. The new dwelling’s roof is sprayed with gold and silver, Little kids will fill the courtyard with joy and laughter.
