CharlotteBront?wasbornonApril21,1816,inThornton,Yorkshire,inthenorthofEngland,thethirdchildoftheReverendPatrickBront?andMariaBranwellBront?.In1820thefamilymovedtoneighboringHaworth,whereReverendBront?wasofferedalifetimecuracy.ThefollowingyearMrs.Bront?diedofcancer,andhersister,ElizabethBranwell,movedintohelpraisethesixchildren.Thefoureldestsisters--Charlotte,Emily,Maria,andElizabeth--attendedCowanBridgeSchool,untilMariaandElizabethcontractedwhatwasprobablytuberculosisanddiedwithinmonthsofeachother,atwhichpointCharlotteandEmilyreturnedhome.Thefourremainingsiblings--Charlotte,Branwell,Emily,andAnne--playedontheYorkshiremoorsanddreamedupfanciful,fabledworlds,creatingaconstantstreamoftales,suchastheYoungMenplays(1826)andOurFellows(1827).ReverendBront?kepthischildrenabreastofcurrentevents;amongthesewerethe1829parliamentarydebatescenteringontheCatholicQuestion,inwhichtheDukeofWellingtonwasaleadingvoice.Charlotte'sawarenessofpoliticsfilteredintoherfictionalcreations,asinthesiblings'sagaTheIslanders(1827),aboutanimaginaryworldpeopledwiththeBront?children'sreal-lifeheroes,inwhichWellingtonplaysacentralroleasCharlotte'schosencharacter.Throughoutherchildhood,CharlottehadaccesstothecirculatinglibraryatthenearbytownofKeighley.SheknewtheBibleandreadtheworksofShakespeare,GeorgeGordon,LordByron,andSirWalterScott,andsheparticularlyadmiredWilliamWordsworthandRobertSouthey.In1831and1832,CharlotteattendedMissWooler'sschoolatRoeHead,andshereturnedthereasateacherfrom1835to1838.Afterworkingforacoupleofyearsasagoverness,Charlotte,withhersisterEmily,traveledtoBrusselstostudy,withthegoalofopeningtheirownschool,butthisdreamdidnotmaterializeonceshereturnedtoHaworthin1844.In1846thesisterspublishedtheircollectedpoemsunderthepennamesCurrer(Charlotte),Ellis(Emily),andActon(Anne)Bell.ThatsameyearCharlottefinishedherfirstnovel,TheProfessor,butitwasnotacceptedforpublication.However,shebeganworkonJaneEyre,whichwaspublishedin1847andmetwithinstantsuccess.Thoughsomecriticssawimproprietyinthecoreofthestory--therelationshipbetweenamiddle-agedmanandtheyoung,naivegovernesswhoworksforhim--mostreviewerspraisedthenovel,helpingtoensureitspopularity.OneofCharlotte'sliteraryheroes,WilliamMakepeaceThackeray,wroteheralettertoexpresshisenjoymentofthenovelandtopraiseherwritingstyle,asdidtheinfluentialliterarycriticG.H.Lewes.FollowingthedeathsofBranwellandEmilyBront?in1848andAnnein1849,CharlottemadetripstoLondon,whereshebegantomoveinliterarycirclesthatincludedsuchluminariesasThackeray,whomshemetforthefirsttimein1849;hisdaughterdescribedBront?as"atiny,delicate,serious,littlelady."In1850shemetthenotedBritishwriterElizabethGaskell,withwhomsheformedalastingfriendshipandwho,attherequestofReverendBront?,laterbecameherbiographer.Charlotte'snovelVillettewaspublishedin1853.In1854CharlottemarriedArthurBellNicholls,acurateatHaworthwhoworkedwithherfather.Lessthanayearlater,however,shefellseriouslyill,perhapswithtuberculosis,andshediedonMarch31,1855.Atthetimeofherdeath,CharlotteBront?wasacelebratedauthor.The1857publicationofherfirstnovel,TheProfessor,andofGaskell'sbiographyofherlifeonlyheightenedherrenown.AuthorbiographyfromtheBarnes&NobleClassicseditionofJaneEyre.

Sadly,Bront?diedduringherfirstpregnancy.Whileherdeathcertificateliststhecauseofdeathas"phthisis"(tuberculosis),thereisaschoolofthoughtthatbelievesshemayhavediedfromexcessivevomitingcausedbymorningsickness.
