From School Library Journal . LC number unavailable. Grade 3-6-- Second in a projected series of annuals, this volume is just as problematic as its predecessor. First, there's the matter of the selections. Although some of the 30 journals culled, such as Cricket and Cobblestone, feature talented writing, most of the offerings here are not very exciting or appealing to young audiences. An example is an article on printing press operators; few children will be interested in its career emphasis, and the salary scale will date it fast. The ``Invasion of the Couch Potatoes'' from Sports Illustrated for Kids is didactic, leaves many questions, and makes unclear points. The articles are broken into major sections, and are further broken down into subheadings; this grouping system may foster some wholistic thinking arrangements, but is not conducive to a systematic flow of ideas. Fakih's goal of getting kids to turn off their TV sets, read more magazines, and become proactive in changing the world is an admirable one. Unfortunately, these selections aren't likely to achieve it. The accompanying illustrations are a major drawback. The blurry gray photos are unclear, dull, and confusing, particularly those that have been copied from nature magazines. They sure won't get kids away from colorful mass media presentations. With its oversized, heavy format, it's difficult to imagine any child toting this book around. --Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
