Underwater Demolition Team 13 was commissioned in 1968 to help take up the slack and give UDT-12 and UDT-11 more time stateside during the Vietnam War. Approximately 20 men from UDT-21 (Little Creek, VA) volunteered to serve a tour with UDT-13 to help "flesh out" the team, which was made up of new men from UDT Training; some were from SEAL One, others were reserves asking to be recalled to active duty.
In 1969, friends and teammates Ltjg Pete Upton and Photographer's Mate 1st Class Steve Waterman spent a month in Tokyo, Japan creating the original of this cruise book and getting it printed. Then Pete and Steve hitchhiked back to Subic Bay on U.S. Air Force planes to bring the books to the guys in Team 13.
This paperback edition is an excellent remake of the original cloth-bound hardcover, of which there were only 120 copies made.
Biography of Steven L. Waterman:
My first two books, JUST A SAILOR, and MUD DIVING, WHALE SAVING, AND OTHER ADVENTURES, were non-fiction. JUST A SAILOR was the story of my 13 years on active duty as a diver and photographer in the U.S. Navy. The second book, MUD DIVING, WHALE SAVING, AND OTHER ADVENTURES, is a series of adventures since I left the Navy. All these are non-fiction with minimal changing of real names.
Since leaving the Navy, I have worked as an instructor for small dry submarines, a S.E.R.E. Instructor for the Naval Reserves, an NCO in the U.S. Army Reserves, USCG Licensed Charter Boat Captain, Lobster Fisherman, Commercial Diver and supervisor, assisted in the development of the first decompression computer, R.O.V. operator, and some other small jobs.
